COLREGS
The COLREGs are international rules established by the International Maritime Organization that govern how vessels navigate safely to prevent collisions at sea. They act as the “rules of the road” for ships, defining right of way, required actions in situations like crossing, overtaking, and head-on encounters, and the use of lights, shapes, and sound signals to communicate intentions. They apply to all vessels worldwide and require not just knowledge, but good judgment and early, clear action to avoid danger.
During the day Vessels are required to indicate their actions by the use of Dayshapes.
Dayshapes are displayed in high, visible parts of the vessel

During the night just like during the day, Vessels are required to indicate their actions by the use of Lights .
The Lights have specific locations and sequencing to determine the type of vessel, actions and right-of-way.

Just like driving a car on the road, in some cases one vessel will have navigational priority over another vessel. Below you will find an illustration that lists which vessels have priority over another.
